In the morning, you will board a domestic flight from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (1 hr. 50 min flight). Get your cameras ready as you will be flying above the beautiful Himalayas mountain range among the clouds. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted by our friendly Tibetan guide who will bring you to the hotel (1 hr. drive away) where you meet up with your fellow travelers. Rest and relax at your own leisure for the rest of the day. For proper acclimation to the high altitude, there will not be any guided sightseeing today.

DAY 02

LHASA SIGHTSEEING

The next two days will be spent exploring the sights in Lhasa City and understanding the rich history and culture of her people. In the morning, we will take a short stroll to the spiritual heart of Tibet – Jokhang Temple – and appreciate the religiosity of Tibetans by seeing how they perform the physically demanding koras. Thereafter, we will shop around Bakhor Street an interesting open air market where you can see peddlers selling wares side by side with circumambulating Buddhist pilgrims. In the afternoon we will visit the famous Potala Palace, where the legendary Dalai Lamas used to live, and revisit scenes where the movie “Seven Years in Tibet” took its inspiration from.

DAY 03

LHASA SIGHTSEEING

In the morning you will visit the sprawling complex of Drepung Monastery (literally translates as “rice heap”, a reference to the huge numbers of white monastic buildings that once piled up on the hillside) which used to be official residence of the Dalai Lamas before the Potala Palace was built in the 17th century. Drepung was purportedly the largest monastery in the world, with more than 7,000 resident monks at its peak. It is considered one of the three great university monasteries of Tibet, the other two are the Ganden Monastery and the Sera Monastery. Today Drepung still houses more than 300 monks therefore a visit to the monastery will offer you a glimpse into their monastic lifestyle. In the afternoon you will visit the Sera Monastery (literally translates as “wild roses”) where you can watch monks engaging in scripture debates in an ancient ritualized manner. One monk, the questioner, will slap his hands together, stomp his feet and point to another monk to debate or argue. The questions being asked and answered are deep, philosophical questions related to the Buddha Dharma.

DAY 05

SHIGATSE – RONGBUK – EVEREST BASE CAMP

Today, we will get up close and personal with the Grand Dame – Mount Everest. We will drive to the EBC (Everest Base Camp) by crossing several passes along the way with sweeping views of the Himalayas range – including Makalu, Lhotse, Everest and Cho Oyu. The drive then descends down to valleys lined with photogenic villages and finally to the Rongbuk valley where the base camp is located. The vehicle will drop you off at the tent guesthouse area which is about 3km away from the EBC. You can either take a shuttle bus (approx. 20 min drive) or trek (approx.1 hrs. uphill trek). The Base Camp itself is dry and barren, but the views of Everest are beyond breathtaking. Catch the sunset over Mount Everest and witness how the mountains get illuminated by the sun rays.
