BANYUWANGI – IJEN CRATER – CEMORO LAWANG

Your adventure begins with an early wake-up call at 3:30–4:00 AM for the unforgettable Ijen night hike. A scenic 45-minute drive takes you to the Ijen ranger post, where your 1–1.5 hour trek begins under a starry sky. As you reach the crater rim, a surreal sight awaits—the vast, otherworldly crater glowing with the eerie blue flames of ignited sulfuric gas. Gaze upon the mesmerizing 200-meter-deep turquoise lake, one of the most acidic on Earth, and witness the incredible determination of miners carrying 70kg sulfur-laden sacks through the harsh volcanic terrain.

As the first light of dawn illuminates the crater, soak in the breathtaking sunrise before heading to Lumbang Village. There, you will discover the majestic Madakaripura Waterfalls, a towering 200-meter cascade hidden within lush, misty cliffs—truly a sight to behold. End your exhilarating day with a drive to Cemoro Lawang, where you can unwind and recharge for the next adventure (approx. 4 hours)

Day 03

CEMORO LAWANG – MOUNT BROMO – SURABAYA

At around 3:30 AM, you’ll receive a wake-up call to prepare for an unforgettable Mount Bromo sunrise hike. An exhilarating 4WD ride brings you to Gunung Penanjakan (2,770m) on the edge of the Tengger crater rim, where you’ll be captivated by the stunning sunrise over the Bromo landscape. Here, the dormant core of Mount Batok (2,440m) and the active Mount Bromo (2,329m) rise from the flat volcanic sand bed, with the mighty Gunung Semeru (3,676m) standing guard to the south.

After savoring the sunrise, continue your journey on the 4WD across the expansive Laotian Pasir (Sand Sea) to Poten—a charming Tenggerese Hindu temple beside Mount Bromo. From Poten, choose between a 3km hike or a pony ride to reach the base of Mount Bromo, then ascend 253 steep steps for a close-up view of the crater rim. Return to your lodge for a well-deserved breakfast.

Next, journey to Surabaya city (approx. 4 hours) and check in to your hotel for a short rest. Explore the historic House of Sampoerna—built by the Dutch in 1862—which now houses a museum, art gallery, café, and souvenir shops. Finally, embark on a food adventure in Surabaya, sampling local delights like rujak cingur—a unique salad with tapioca-peanut sauce and slices of cooked cow nose—and sate kelopo, satay drizzled with coconut sauce.

TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP:

1. Do remember to bring along your winter wear (fleece jacket, scarf, beanie, gloves) as it gets really really cold and windy in the wee hours. Dress in layers so you can remove them easily after the sun comes out.

2. Due to the dust and sulphur at Mt Bromo and Ijen Crater, our guide will bring along basic disposal face masks for everybody. But it will be advisable to higher quality masks (e.g. N95 Air+) on your own. If you are taking the optional hike down Ijen Crater, the extra cost comes with the rental of a gas mask.

3. You may get wet at the waterfalls. So bring along appropriate footwear (e.g. wet shoes, avoid footwear with poor grip) and clothing (towel). Disposable poncho will be provided. Waterproof your gears such as camera as well. Should you require, there will be a place to change into dry clothing after a visit to the waterfalls.

4. Bring a torch light (or use your mobile phone app) for the early morning Mt Bromo and Ijen Crater sunrise, head lamp will be good as it leaves your hands free.

5. Reaching Ijen crater requires a 2-3 hour hike so if you do not exercise regularly, do take the time to train up to make it more comfortable experience.

6. The accommodations at Mt Bromo and Ijen Crater are in the countryside so they are generally more basic and comfort level are not as high as the hotels in cities.

7. As there long road journeys on windy roads, please bring along car sickness or motion sickness medicines if you need them. During the journey, do request our driver to make frequent stops for rest.

8. Due to the distances between sights, early wake-ups and the many sights to visit, most people will find the itinerary rather tiring. Do rest early at night.

9. While meals in the countryside can be basic, once you reach the city like Surabaya, you will find many good restaurants. Our local guide will be able to give good recommendations based on your preference or you can consider some of the restaurants listed in our FAQs.

10. For amount of IDR to bring, IDR 1,500,000 should be more than enough each person for meals (6 meals of IDR 100,000 to IDR 150,000 each), IDR 200,000 for optional hike down Ijen crater and some spare cash. Bring more cash if you intend to do some shopping.
