You will be given an early morning wakeup call at around 2am to prepare for the Ijen night hike. You will be transferred to the trail head at Paltuding, where you will start the 3km hike to the crater rim (approx. 1-1.5 hrs hike). At the crater rim, you will be rewarded by an amazing view of the gigantic crater and the 200 meter deep turquoise sulfuric crater lake. You will also be able to witness how some of the world’s toughest workers battle the toxic fumes and treacherous terrain to haul 70kg sacks brimming with sulphur deposit to make a living. Thereafter you will be transferred to Jajag (approx. 2 hrs drive) where you will switch to a 4 wheel drive for another 3-4 hours’ drive over bumpy dirt track and some stream crossing to your guesthouse in Meru Betiri National Park. The rough journey will be well compensated by nice scenery along the way which includes rice fields, coco plantations, cliffs and beaches. After dinner, you will proceed to Sukamade Beach for turtle sightings. Almost every night of the year, a number of turtle species including green sea turtle, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley turtle and occasionally leatherback turtle appear on Sukamade beach to lay eggs (although the turtles come ashore almost every night, there is always the possibility that they don’t). You will be guided by a park ranger who will share with you some of their conservation efforts and challenges
* It is possible to hike down the Ijen crater to have a closer view of the blue flame, but you would have to set off earlier (12am-1am) from the hotel. Arrange with your tour guide the night before if you would like to hike down the crater.
**Turtle sightings though frequent are not guaranteed. Cross your fingers!

Day 05
CEMORO LAWANG – MOUNT BROMO – SURABAYA
Wake up at 3am for the highlight of your visit to Mount Bromo. A 4WD will then take you up to the neighbouring peak of Mount Penanjakan (2,770m), located along the edge of the Tengger crater rim. From this famous viewpoint, watch the sunrise gradually illuminate the dramatic Bromo landscape — a vast 10km-wide caldera formed from the collapsed remnants of an ancient volcano. As daylight spreads across the horizon, the volcanic panorama slowly reveals itself. Rising from the flat volcanic sand bed of the caldera is the perfectly shaped cone of Mount Batok (2,440m) and the smoking crater of Mount Bromo (2,329m). Further south beyond the crater wall stands the majestic Mount Semeru (3,676m), the highest and most active volcano in Java. After sunrise, the 4WD will descend into the caldera and cross the vast Lautan Pasir (Sea of Sand) to reach Pura Luhur Poten, a sacred Tenggerese Hindu temple located at the foot of Mount Bromo. From here, continue on foot or by pony for the 3km journey across the sand sea to the base of the volcano. You will then climb a steep staircase of 253 steps to reach the crater rim of Mount Bromo. Peer into the steaming crater where offerings of chickens, rice and money are still thrown by Tengger Hindus as a gesture of gratitude to the gods. Afterwards, leave the stark volcanic landscape behind and visit the quiet and beautiful Whispering Savannah nearby. Finally, depart the Bromo area and drive back to Surabaya (approximately 4 hours). After some rest at your hotel, head out again in the evening for dinner and night market shopping.
